White slavery in colonial New England

Eleven-year-old Philip Welch was kidnapped from his own bed in 1654, by order of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England. He and another Irish lad, William Downing, were loaded onto the ship Goodfellow, which by then was already bursting at the seams with Irish women and children destined for slavery in New England.

So not only did Oliver Cromwell direct the physical and psychological torture of the Celts of Ireland; he also saw to it that England was re-infected.

From an early age I knew he was a supremely evil human, but I wasn’t aware he was an absolute traitor to his own people as well.

I promise not to become a Pogues-posting maniac, but this just brings to mind lyrics to ‘Young Ned of the Hill’ which go, in part, like this:

A curse upon you Oliver Cromwell
You who raped our Mother Land
I hope you’re rotting down in hell
for the horrors that you sent
to our misfortunate forefathers
who were robbed of their Birthright
‘To Hell or Connacht!’, may you burn in hell tonight….
